COUNTRY UPDATE


Regarding Internally displaced people (IDPs), with a mobilization both from government and the community, West Guji and Gedeo IDPs got a significant support inside their respective camps, media reported. The plan of returning refugees to their previous home is also showing progress over the ended month. For example, only on May 03, 40 cars facilitated the return of 15,000 IDPs from Gedeb to 10 kebeles in Kercha woreda of West Guji zone, Gedeo Zonal Disaster Risk Management Office (DRMO) reported.2

Also, the Eastern and Western Welega Zone Government in Oromia region has reported high number of returns of 137,000 IDPs who were victims of the instability in the area. The IDP’s return, according to the local government, caused the closure of 18 temporary camps which served as shelter in Nekemte. Now, however, close to 4000 IDPs remain under shelters.3

Another significant story over the ended month was the crush of a plane like Ethiopian March Accident. The same model of Boeing 737 airplane, which caused the death of 157 passengers and crew members in Ethiopia, was found floating on St. John River of Florida on May 4. 147 of its passengers survived a crush, which could have been reason for loss of their lives.4


CHALLENGES

The rate of inflation has increased from 11% on April to 12.6% in May. This is impacted due to in increase in different products including Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages, housing, utilities and clothing’s.5

A one-month long consistent electric power interruption program was launched in Ethiopia since May 9. Due to a shortage of water in dams located Southern and Eastern regions of the country government Minister of Water, Irrigation and Energy has announced there will be a scheduled electric power halt in the country up to the end of this month. The breakdown was designed in a fair way to compensate the 426 megawatts national power deficit the country going through due to the shortages of water in the dams of Koka, Melka Wakena and Gibe III. The power cut was also to Sudan and Djibouti where power export goes to as well.6

An early warning on the slight occurrence of el nino, a weather change caused by rise above-normal levels on sea surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific Ocean, was released by National Meteorology Agency (NMA). The effects of the weather change could also result a drought in some areas, says the release.  Prior to this warning National Disaster Risk Management Commission (NDRMC) was undergoing a serious work prevent flood prone areas of the country including Addis Ababa.7
